Whole Foods has one of the best protein bar aisles in any grocery store. The catch is that "sold at Whole Foods" does not automatically mean clean or high protein. Some of the bars on the shelf are basically candy with a health halo, and some of the cleanest bars only have 11 or 12 grams of protein.
We ranked the protein bars you are most likely to find at Whole Foods Market by protein, sugar, ingredient quality, and what each one is actually good for. We also flag the one bar most people miss because it lives in the refrigerated case, not the snack aisle.
Every bar below is listed on Whole Foods Market's own online grocery pages, but stock varies by store and by region. Flavors rotate, and smaller stores carry fewer brands. Nutrition numbers come from Whole Foods product listings and brand labels and can vary by flavor, so check the wrapper in your hand before you buy.
| Bar | Protein | Calories | Sugar | Our pick for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No Cow | 20g | ~200 | low (check flavor) | Most protein per bar |
| ALOHA | 14g | 230 | 4-5g | Best balance of protein, fiber, and low sugar |
| Perfect Bar Peanut Butter | 17g | 320-340 | 18-19g | Best whole food bar (refrigerated case) |
| RXBAR | 12g | ~200-210 | 13-17g (0g added) | Cleanest short ingredient list |
| KIND Protein Crunchy Peanut Butter | 12g | ~250 | 7g | Best easy-to-find snack bar |
| GoMacro MacroBar | 11g | ~290 | 8-12g | Best organic vegan snack bar |
| 365 Peanut Butter Energy Bar | 13g | ~260 | 18g | Best store brand (energy, not protein) |
20g plant protein, low sugar, high fiber.
If you walk into Whole Foods needing a real post-workout bar, No Cow is the strongest option on the shelf. At 20 grams of plant-based protein per bar, it is the only bar on this list that competes with gym-aisle bars like Barebells on protein. It is dairy free, soy free, and gluten free.
The trade-off is the ingredient list. Getting 20 grams of protein and very little sugar into a bar takes protein isolates, added fibers, and alternative sweeteners. That is not a dealbreaker, but it is a different kind of bar than RXBAR or Perfect Bar. Some people also find the texture dense and dry. Our full No Cow review covers flavors and texture in detail.
14g plant protein, 10g fiber, 4 to 5g sugar, about 230 calories.
ALOHA is our pick for most shoppers. It is organic, vegan, and uses no sugar alcohols, sucralose, or stevia, which is rare for a bar this low in sugar. Protein comes from brown rice and pumpkin seed protein, and the 10 grams of fiber (mostly tapioca fiber) helps it keep you full.
The Maple Sea Salt flavor lists 4g of sugar and 14g of protein. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Mint, and Chocolate Cherry flavors all land at 14g of protein and about 5g of sugar. If you are sensitive to added fibers, start with one bar to see how your stomach handles 10 grams at once. See our ALOHA review for flavor rankings.
Peanut Butter: 17g protein, 320 to 340 calories, 18 to 19g sugar.
Perfect Bar is the bar most Whole Foods shoppers walk right past, because it sits in the refrigerated section near the yogurt and grab-and-go items rather than the snack aisle. It is built on organic peanut butter and honey, with whole egg powder, nonfat dry milk, and a blend of dried whole food powders like kale, flax, and carrot.
It is a genuinely filling bar with protein from whole food sources, and the Peanut Butter flavor hits 17 grams. But read the whole label: it is also 320 to 340 calories with about 13g of added sugar, mostly from honey. Treat it as a small meal, not a light snack. The Dark Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter flavor has 15g of protein and 330 calories, and the Chocolate Chip Cookie flavor drops to 12g of protein. Wondering why it needs the fridge? We explain in our guide to refrigerated protein bars.
12g protein, about 200 to 210 calories, 13 to 17g sugar with 0g added.
RXBAR's ingredient list is famously short. The Peanut Butter flavor is dates, peanuts, egg whites, peanut flour, sea salt, and natural flavors. Every gram of sugar comes from dates, and the protein comes from egg whites and nuts. Whole Foods usually carries a wide flavor range and multi-packs.
The weakness is the same as always: 12 grams of protein is snack level, and 17 grams of fruit sugar is a lot if you are managing blood sugar. Pair it with nuts or Greek yogurt if you need more staying power. More in our RXBAR review.
Crunchy Peanut Butter: 12g protein, 7g sugar.
KIND Protein is a nut-forward bar with peanuts as the first ingredient. It is lower in sugar than RXBAR and easy to find in almost every Whole Foods. Be careful not to confuse it with KIND Breakfast bars sitting nearby, which have only 8 grams of protein and 10 grams of sugar. Our KIND Protein review has the full breakdown.
11g protein, about 290 calories, 8 to 12g sugar depending on flavor.
GoMacro is organic, vegan, and certified by several clean-label programs. Its protein comes from sprouted brown rice and pea protein. It is a good real-food snack, but organic brown rice syrup is high on the ingredient list and the calories are high relative to 11 grams of protein. Buy it because you like it and want organic, not because you need protein. See our GoMacro review.
13g protein, 18g sugar.
The house brand bar has more protein than you might expect, with 13 grams from peanuts and soy. But 18 grams of sugar puts it closer to an energy bar than a protein bar, which is exactly how Whole Foods labels it. It is a solid pick for hiking or a long day on your feet, and a weaker pick for a desk snack.
If you are trying to hit a protein target without blowing your calorie budget, protein per 100 calories is the number that matters. Here is how the Whole Foods lineup compares.
| Bar | Protein | Calories | Protein per 100 calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Cow | 20g | ~200 | ~10g |
| ALOHA | 14g | 230 | 6.1g |
| RXBAR | 12g | ~200 | ~6g |
| Perfect Bar Peanut Butter | 17g | ~340 | 5.0g |
| KIND Protein | 12g | ~250 | ~4.8g |
| GoMacro MacroBar | 11g | ~290 | 3.8g |
| 365 Peanut Butter Energy Bar | 13g | ~260 | ~5g |
No Cow is the clear leader. Everything else lands in the 4 to 6 gram range, which is typical for bars made mostly from nuts, dates, and honey. That is the honest trade-off at Whole Foods: the cleaner the ingredient list, the lower the protein density tends to be.
A few patterns are worth avoiding even in a store with strict ingredient standards:
| If you want... | Grab this |
|---|---|
| You want the most protein | No Cow. 20g of plant protein per bar |
| You want low sugar without sugar alcohols | ALOHA. About 5g of sugar and 10g of fiber |
| You want the shortest ingredient list | RXBAR. Dates, egg whites, and nuts |
| You want a filling, real-food bar | Perfect Bar, from the refrigerated case |
| You want organic and vegan | GoMacro or ALOHA |
| You want the cheapest option | The 365 store brand, as a snack rather than a protein source |
Whole Foods wins on ingredient quality and variety of clean and organic brands. It loses on price and on high-protein gym bars. If you want 20g-plus bars like Barebells, Quest, or Kirkland in bulk, Costco and Walmart are better bets. If you are near a Trader Joe's, you will find a smaller, cheaper selection that overlaps with RXBAR. For a store-agnostic ranking, see our list of the cleanest protein bars and our guide to whole food protein bars.
For most people, ALOHA is the best everyday protein bar at Whole Foods: 14 grams of protein, 10 grams of fiber, and about 5 grams of sugar with no sugar alcohols. If you need more protein, grab No Cow. If you want the most real-food bar in the store, head to the refrigerated case for Perfect Bar and treat it like a small meal.
It depends on your goal. ALOHA offers the best balance of protein, fiber, and low sugar. RXBAR and Perfect Bar have the most recognizable whole food ingredients, but more sugar.
No Cow, with 20g of plant-based protein per bar. Perfect Bar Peanut Butter is next at 17g.
In the refrigerated section, usually near yogurt, cheese, or grab-and-go snacks, not in the snack bar aisle.
The 365 Peanut Butter Energy Bar has 13g of protein but 18g of sugar. It works as an energy snack for activity, but it is not a low-sugar protein bar.
Selection varies by store. Whole Foods focuses on cleaner, organic brands. Costco and Walmart are more reliable for Barebells and Quest.
